Deadly Storm Hits Uttar Pradesh: 89 Killed Amid Extreme Weather Conditions

“Deadly Storm Hits Uttar Pradesh: What Happened and Why It Matters”

"The powerful storm caused severe disruption and widespread damage in several parts of Uttar Pradesh."

Disaster response teams carried out rescue and restoration efforts as strong winds, heavy rain, and lightning disrupted normal life across several regions of Uttar Pradesh.

Emergency Response After the UP Storm

A powerful and unseasonal storm struck several districts of Uttar Pradesh on May 13, bringing heavy rainfall, lightning, hailstorms, and intense winds that caused widespread destruction across the state. According to official reports, at least 89 people lost their lives while more than 50 others were injured in weather-related incidents. The storm severely affected districts including Prayagraj, Bhadohi, Fatehpur, Mirzapur, Budaun, Sonbhadra, Bareilly, and Chandauli, where strong winds uprooted trees, damaged houses, collapsed walls, disrupted transportation, and caused major electricity outages.

Authorities stated that many fatalities were caused by lightning strikes, falling trees, collapsing structures, and flying debris during the intense storm conditions. Rescue and relief teams, including local administration and disaster response forces, were immediately deployed to clear roads, restore public services, and support affected families. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to carry out relief operations on priority and ensure compensation and emergency assistance reached victims’ families within 24 hours.

The India Meteorological Department had issued thunderstorm and lightning alerts across parts of North India due to changing weather patterns linked to western disturbances. The incident has once again raised concerns about the increasing frequency of extreme weather events and the need for stronger disaster preparedness, public awareness, and emergency response systems across vulnerable regions.
